Dear students,

We may be nearing the end of the year... but we are far from finished! You still need to be coming to class prepared (paper, pencil, French binder, study logs, etc). Remember, being prepared for class is part of your participation grade and I will be doing weekly participation rubrics right up until exams.

Speaking of study logs...

French 1: You need to be studying: Les Objets/ Ma Chambre vocabulary. Les Adjectifs. Verbs: etre/ avoir/ faire and all regular -er verbs. You also should be able to create sentences using sous/sur/dans... etc. Your final exam will include everything from French 1... it would be wise to be spending time each week preparing for that as well.

French 2: Passe Compose!! You need to memorize which verbs use "etre" as the auxiliary verb. You need to memorize all irregular past participles (as well as the patterns for regular past participles). Begin studying for your final exam!!

French 3: Les Verbes Reflechis/ Le Corps vocabulaire/ y + en... You will see all of this on a test very soon. As for your final exam, it will only include material learned during 2nd semester.

French 4: Your final projects will count as your exam grade. Be sure to pace yourself and use your time wisely!

What to study now?

Welcome back from vacation! Time to get back to studying. (And to begin preparing for the final exam... :)

"What should I study?!"

French 1: You have been getting a lot of new vocabulary this week and it is very important that you study your new notes every night! (Your description notes, your "objects" notes and on Friday you will be getting even MORE vocabulary)! Don't forget about your POP quizzes... you always need to be prepared.

French 2: All of your "week-end" vocabulary!!!

French 3: Body part vocabulary!!! You will soon be starting your skits that will take place at the doctor's office... so you will need to know your "La Sante" notes as well. - You will be getting these on Thursday (April 28).

Get studying! Merci bien!! (And don't forget to fill out those study logs BEFORE you come to class)

Back to regular updates on the classroom blog... my apologies for my absence here lately! We are still continuing with study logs for Quarter 4. Each student is excepted to fill out their study log and be ready to hand it in on the due date. (Each student has 7 days to complete their study log). Students are getting in the habit again of filling out their study logs in class right before handing it in. I will not accept study logs that are not filled out prior to the due date. The only thing you should be filling out on the due date is the "total time" at the bottom of the study log. As for study hours. Each student is required to study 2.5 hours a week... but for quarter 4 I have begun a new procedure. If a student receives an A+ on a quiz/ test (97% or above) they may take 30 minutes of studying off their study log. Every time the student receives an A+ or above, the student many continue to take off 30 minutes from their study log. When the student gets below a 97%, the student must add back on 30 minutes. (Study logs will never exceed 2.5 hours). Some students may get down to zero minutes needed for the study log and I have told them that they still need to do as much studying as necessary to maintain their good grades and to begin preparing for the final exam! Study logs are a big part of each student's weekly participation grade. I highly recommend that students take advantage of using their study logs and complete the necessary studying each week. Even if you feel you have a solid grasp on the current topics, feel free to begin review for your final exam. What to study now?? French 1: The week of April 11-15 will be spent reviewing and preparing for a Unit Test taking place on Friday, April 15th. This means you have plenty to study!!

faire (definition and conjugation)

Interrogative Expressions!!

all "Mots Utiles" vocabulary

French 2: We are finishing up our mini-unit on Professions. You need to be familiar with all of the vocabulary from the different sheets we filled out "Ou?/ Qu'est-ce qu'on fait?/ On travaille avec quoi?". You also need to know all of the professions we learned. (You will not have to spell them on your own but you do need to know the feminine and masculine forms and which professions stay the same in both masc/fem forms. The quiz will be near the end of next week.

French 3: Les Pronoms Complements!!! Direct and indirect objects!! With the present tense and the past tense!! Know when to make agreement with the past participle and when NOT to make agreement. Know which verbs take direct or indirect objects or which verbs can take either!

You should also be studying the conjugations of : dire, ecrire, lire and the vocabulary that we learned along with these irregular verbs.

This goes for all of my classes: Feel free to begin preparing for your final exam!!! It is never too soon to start! : )

And remember... if you are having a hard time with ANYTHING in French class, do not hesitate to schedule a time with me to receive extra help. I am always here after school and I have period 4 & 8 free. (Check with me before coming to make sure I am available...I usually have a meeting or two each week after school).

Study Log Reminders

You have one full week to complete 2.5 hours of studying.

Your study log is due at the beginning of class on the due date... no exceptions. You should have your entire study log filled out (with the total) when you walk into class on the due date.

I will not accept late study logs unless you had an excused absence the day of the due date. No exceptions.

Study Logs and Vacation

As I collect study logs this week, I am not handing out new ones. I will not be assigning 2.5 hours of studying over vacation. You will receive your next study logs when you return from vacation.

You may choose to do some studying over vacation! And if you do... keep track of the time and I will allow you to use that time to count towards the week after vacation.

Although I am not assigning anything over vacation, I suggest you spend some time studying and reviewing your notes.

French 1: You should spend time reviewing all of your verbs (regular -er verbs such as parler and jouer... as well as etre). You should also be studying "Les Invitations", "Les Questions" et "La Negation" notes. You should be able to talk about what you like and don't like to do and be able to invite someone to do something with you and know how to accept or decline an invitation.

French 2: You should continue to study your clothing vocabulary! Most of you know all the vocabulary but when it comes to spelling and knowing the gender... :) Let's just say: spend some time studying that! You also should be studying your new irregular verbs : acheter, amener, esperer, mettre... You can also spend time practicing "ce" and "quel".

French 3: Any notes on "Les Pronoms Complements" you should be spending time reviewing.

Study Reminders

I will continue to administer weekly pop quizzes to verify that you have been completing your 2.5 hours of required weekly studying.

French 1: You should be studying your -er verbs (parler, jouer...etc). You should also be studying the new expressions we have learned which include discussing your likes and dislikes, as well as invitations and accepting or declining invitations.

French 2: You should be studying your clothing vocabulary (this includes describing clothing)! You will be having a test on all clothing on February 11.

French 3: You should be studying your "Les Spectacles" and "Les Invitations" vocabulary. You should also be practicing your "Pronoms Complements" grammar.

EVERYONE: You should be completing your study logs! You must complete 2.5 hours in the 7 days you are given to receive full credit. If you lose your study log, keep track of the time on a separate piece of paper.

French 1: Pop quiz corrections are due Monday. If you did not receive a 100%, you must do these! Also, if you did not complete the in-class worksheet on Friday this is a homework assignment due Monday.

French 1, you should also be studying all the new vocabulary you received this week!! Spelling and definitions!

French 2: You should be preparing for the Fashion Show. (Costumes!) Period 2: Your Fashion Show will be taking place on Tuesday (Feb 2). Period 7: Your Fashion Show will be taking place on Wednesday (Feb 3).

French 2 students should also be studying clothing vocabulary!! (Spelling and definitions!!)

French 3: You will be presenting your skits during the second half of class on Monday. I will be collecting copies of your skits before you present. You should practice your lines so you will be able to act out your skit and not read line for line.

What do I study??

Now that you all have your study logs to keep track of... some of you may be wondering what to study. Let me help you with that!

French 1: You should be studying weather expressions and seasons! You can also use your mid-term exam, find the sections that you had the most difficulty on, and study that. (i.e. numbers, restaurant expressions, months, days of the week, etc. )

French 2: Clothing!!!!!!!! (And all the notes we took along with clothing).

French 3: Some of you need a "refresher" course on the past tense. Please spend some time reviewing this! We will be starting a new unit this week, so any vocabulary/ grammar notes we take you should be studying at home/ during study hall.

Semester 2 Update: New Procedure

Study Log: Each student will be given a weekly "study log". They are to record their studying for that week in their study log and return it to me on the due date. They will have 7 days to complete 2.5 hours (or more) of studying. This procedure is to encourage students to study more and hopefully improve quiz and test grades. Students should focus their studying on the current topics in their class.
The completion of the study log will count as a homework grade. If students lose the official study log, they can use a piece of paper to record their time/ material studied to hand in to me.
"Pop" quizzes will be adminstered more frequently to verify that this studying is being done.

Please be sure to keep up with your studying!

(This study time does not include time you spend working on any homework assigned).

Students in French 1 will be researching the 5 day forecast of a French speaking city. During class time they will create a weather bulletin (poster) where they will display the weather conditions for each day in French. These will be presented in class.

Welcome Back! Time for Exams :)

I hope everyone had a relaxing vacation. Now that we are back... it is time to prepare for our exams. Each class will receive their review packet today (Period 7 - you'll be getting yours when I see you tomorrow, Tuesday).
Each day we will spend time reviewing and preparing for the exam. Like I mentioned in a previous post, you will all be starting your French exam this week as you take the Speaking section of the exam with me individually.
Remember to get in any missing work from quarter 2, I will be accepting it until this Friday (Jan 7). You will also have an opportunity during class to work on make-up work this week.

Dear French students,

I hope you all have a wonderful vacation. Take some time to relax, rejuvinate... and study some French. Do not forgot, mid-terms are right around the corner. (January 11-14). I will be giving you all your review packets when we return but you should begin your studying as soon as possible! Each exam will include the following sections: speaking, listening, writing, and reading comprehension. The speaking section of the exam will take place BEFORE the actual exam week.

French 2: You should be studying VENIR de and your Pronoms Accentues. A reminder that your quiz is tomorrow for period 2 and Thursday for period 7.

French 3: You should be studying your "articles partitifs" - which means you should be studying the genders of your foods/drinks. You should also be studying your "Le Choix des articles" notesheets as well as the verb conjugations for: vouloir, pouvoir, devoir, esperer, amener, acheter, boire, preferer, payer, nettoyer, envoyer!

French 1: Au Cafe Skit

French 1 has been assigned a project that will go along with their current "Cafe" unit. They will be creating skits in class, memorizing their lines, bringing in props, and presenting. (Period 6 - you will be receiving information on this assignment tomorrow, Friday the 12th of November).

Students will have 3.5 class days to prepare these skits with their groups. (Of course, this is subject to change if students are not using this class time wisely or if I see that students need more or less time to complete this assignment). Students must hand in a typed copy of the skit prior to presenting. This is a homework assignment and I will not allow students to leave class to go type up their skits. Class time will be dedicated to working with your group in writing and memorizing lines.

Please refer to the assignment guidelines and rubric handed out in class for more information.

Due Dates (subject to change):

Period 1: You will start presenting during the second half of class on Wednesday, November 17 and finish on Friday, November 19. (I will be randomly selecting the order, so be prepared for Wednesday!)

Period 6: You will start presenting during the second half of class on Thursday, November 18 and finish on Friday, November 19. (I will be randomly selecting the order, so be prepared for Thursday!)

*Note: If you have been absent this week (11/8 - 11/12) you have been assigned to a group and they have included you in their skit. You will join them when you return.

French 1 students have been assigned a project today (November 8th). This project is to design and create a French menu.
Please see the guidelines and grading rubric passed out in class today for more details.

November 2 Updates

French 1: During your nightly studying, you should be focusing on your "Au Cafe" vocabulary. This includes ordering, foods, and drinks. You will be preparing a skit for this soon, so it is important to be familiar with the vocabulary.

French 2: During your nightly studying, you should be focusing on venir + de; sports/ games / instruments and their "jouer + ..." formula ; Les Pronoms Accentues; and of course, La Ville!

French 3: During your nightly studying, you should be focusing on La Nourriture et les articles Partitifs! Memorize the genders of the foods so you will know which "article partitif" should be used!

France Trip Meeting

As a result there will be a meeting for those students interested in going on a trip to France in April 2012 on Monday, October 18th at 6:30 p.m. in the cafeteria. Class Updates

French 1: French 1 students should be spending time at home reviewing and studying their numbers! We can only spend so much time on numbers in class, a lot of the memorization needs to be done at home.
French 1 students should also be practicing all other vocabulary we have been learning. We are applying what we have been learning into a skit that will be presented next Monday. This skit needs to be memorized! (Again, more time spent at home!)

French 2: French 2 students have just completed their first quiz, La Ville Vocabulary. Students who struggled on this quiz should spend time studying the vocabulary at home... you will see it again on your next few quizzes! We are also creating a skit to perform for the class in French 2. This will be prepared mostly in class, with some preparation taking place at home. This will be due next Monday/ Tuesday. Students in French 2 are also undertaking a rather creative assignment. They have been asked to develop their "Dream House" and create this using poster board, cardboard, wood, or anything else they can think of! This assignment is due Friday, September 24th. Keep up with your studying! (La Ville... Les Directions... La Maison)

French 3: French 3 has been studying Food! We are growing our vocabulary by adding many new "food" words and discussing our likes and dislikes in relation to food and eating. French 3 students will be creating a skit which will take place at a restaurant and will include all of the previously mentioned vocabulary topics. This will be presented on Monday! (Sept 20)

French 4: French 4 has been doing a wonderful job in teaching the 7th graders. They have been leading them in song and games. The 7th graders have learned their French alphabet, numbers 1-30, body parts, and simple greetings. I am very impressed with the French 4 students and their ability to lead and teach (with great success!) When we do not have the 7th graders, we will be focusing on growing our vocabulary and grammar in various topics.

France and Spain: We are in the early stages of planning a trip to France in Spain in April of 2012. Students who are interested should sign up with Mlle. Riendeau. There will be an informational meeting soon to discuss our first fundraiser (Coin-Drop in October) and to get students enrolled! Start saving if you are interested. - Stay tuned for more information.

French 1: Your first quiz (which will assess your comprehension of the French alphabet) will take place this Friday, September 10.

French 2: Your first quiz ("La Ville" Vocabulary) will take place on Monday, September 13 for Period 2, and on Tuesday, September 14 for Period 7.

Quick culture: France celebrates their Labor Day, called "La Fête du Travail" on May 1st!

As for my French students here in the USA, I hope you all have a great three day weekend. Here are some ideas for studying:

French 1: Alphabet, Simple Greetings, Nationalities

French 2: La Ville (town) vocabulary

French 3: Les Repas et La Table vocabulary, review your past tense!!

French 4: Get ready to teach the 7th Graders on Thursday!

French 1:
French 1 students are beginning their journey into the foreign language world. We have begun with the alphabet so we can learn the sounds of the French language, and simple greetings. Students should be practicing and studying each night to prepare themselves for in-class work.

French 2:
In French 2, we have begun our first unit of the year. This unit will include "La Ville et La Maison", or "The Town and The House". During this unit students will use "town" vocabulary (i.e. the hospital, the library, the post office, etc). Students will be able to give and receive directions around a town. This unit also includes "house" vocabulary. Students will identify and describe the different rooms and areas of a house. Today, August 31st, students in period 2 received the "La Ville" vocabulary sheet. Thursday,September 2nd, period 7 will receive these notes. Students should be practicing and studying at home as we will be using this vocabulary in class!

French 3:
We are beginning the year in French 3 with a review of the past tense. Today we discussed what we did during the summer as a refresher activity. I recommend students spend time going over these notes from last year! If you do not have your notes from last year, please see me or a friend and we will work something out.

French 4:
French 4 will be working with the 7th graders this year. Each quarter, a different group of 7th graders experiences the French language and culture. The French 4 students will be aiding me in creating lesson plans and teaching the 7th graders. On days that we do not have the 7th graders, the French 4 students will be working on building their vocabulary and grammar skills! Hopefully some will be interested in taking the SAT2 in French.

First Homework Assignment!!

To all French students: Your first homework assignment is to get the green informational sheet read and signed by your parent/ guardian. It is due your next class! This is your first (and easiest) homework assignment so be sure to start the year off right with your first 100%!I do not need the entire green sheet returned to me. Please cut the bottom of the last page off to hand to me and keep the rest in your binder so you can refer to this throughout the year.

La Rentrée!!

"La Rentrée"... one of the most exciting times of the year for a teacher! :) Any guesses as to what it means? It comes from the verb "rentrer" which all you DRMRSVANDERTRAMPP enthusiasts should be familiar with! "La Rentrée" is the return to school after a nice, long summer vacation! "Back to School" would be a good translation.
I am so looking forward to a great new school year with all you wondeful French students. I hope you kept up with your French studies throughout the summer; reviewing vocabulary and practicing with a friend! Maybe typing up all your vocabulary and grammar notes to keep in your new binder? Hopefully as you read this you're nodding your heads in agreement and not LOL-ing!
Well it is time to get back to work! Wake up and smell the French lessons! Let's get started! Bonne chance! (And remember, if you need extra help do NOT hesitate to stop in)!
